life in a glass house
More snow this weekend. But I actually must credit the road crews for cleaning it off in a reasonable amount of time. I didn't have to drive in it, so that was great. I rode with the folks down to my brothers' pad because it's Andy's birthday and we all went to dinner together. I envy their TV (five and a half feet of screen! Fuck!) and kegerator.
I finally saw Children of Men this weekend. I can't recommend this film enough. SPOILERS AHEAD, and such.
I liked how it didn't get all telly about why women were infertile. It just left it up to the viewer, and of course, the characters in the film didn't know why either.
Britain is the only country still standing after the rest of the world fell into decline, and they now have a huge illegal immigration problem. Seeing their solution to this problem isn't at all hard to see a government do in the real world. And that sets up the conflict about this baby all of a sudden appearing, and a bunch of terrorists wanting to use it for political purposes. Seeing people kill each other wholesale, even though there weren't any children being born, was such an indictment of human nature.
END SPOILERS.
Yeah, great friggin' movie. I was so wrapped up in it, I neglected my cherry Icee so much that it all melted with about 1/4 of it consumed. If this movie doesn't get any Oscars, the Academy will be even more dead to me than they already are.
It had a pretty bitchin' soundtrack too, something I'm going to pick up as well as the book. The book, written by P.D. James, was published in the early 90s and I wasn't even aware there was a book until last night. It's moved to the top of my reading list.
